Holding in emotions Many people feel uncomfortable expressing their emotions at work and might even create a buffer at home to prevent their children from seeing too much of their struggles. This is perfectly understandable; however, it means that stress is locked up inside with no release. Imagine that your body is a bucket and stress is water being poured into it. At some point, you will be filled to the brim. To avoid overflowing or bursting your capacity, you need to find a way of venting. It isn’t a coincidence that many of the challenges that we face concerning our mental and emotional health seem to disable us and halt our effectiveness in life. The enemy we face isn’t only one that seeks to kill, steal, and destroy in the natural sense. He also contends against our souls, in the inner person where everything that we see outside of us plays out from the inside. When we feel battered by life’s challenges, including the trauma of a troubled past, it can disarm and make us feel as if we cannot win. Although this is what our adversary desires, it isn’t the full picture. He may have orchestrated specific challenges, intending to annihilate our faith and strength. We see and experience it as challenges surface in one area and yet another, making us feel that we are surrounded and must succumb to the pressures of life. But that isn’t the end of the story. God repurposes those same difficulties, as places for us to encounter wisdom and compassion. Though it may not appear so, He has predetermined your triumph that affirms who we are in Him and reveals His glory in foreboding circumstances (1 Corinthians 15:57). The idea of self-care can often feel unattainable, especially during times of stress, busyness, or when we feel overwhelmed. While we recognize the benefits of self-care, taking time to do things for ourselves feels impossible. When life is busy or we feel burdened, we don’t feel like we can stop and go on vacation or go get a massage. While these self-care activities are good, they often become one more thing we can’t seem to do right. Instead of looking for self-care activities that take us out of our everyday lives, we can find things to incorporate into our lives that bring peace. They may not be things that change what is stressing us out. However, participating in attainable self-care activities can fortify our mental wellness so we can better navigate whatever season we are walking through in life. The key to making this work It’s not about finding the magic thing to do or the dream vacation to take. This is all about keeping things realistic and within reach. They need to be activities that you can incorporate into your life without becoming burdensome. If they are easy to incorporate, you are more likely to do them. Understanding the Power of Habits: Formation and Impact

Who we become is a subtotal of our daily habits. How we choose to live our lives and define who we are is determined by those things we do almost automatically. Habits can be defined as behavior acquired through repetition and happen subconsciously, meaning we do not put any thought into it. Most times we are not aware of what it is we are doing or how it is contributing to our welfare and our lives in general. For us to recognize the power that habits have on our lives, we need to clarify for ourselves which ones we have and whether they are serving us. Carl Jung is quoted to have said, “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” In this statement, he makes the point that habits influence our lives. This influence can either be negative or positive. The hope is that if we are conscious of our them, we give ourselves the ability to continue with those that serve us and whom we want to become and start letting go of those that are distracting. How do habits form? In his book, Atomic Habits, James Clear says, “Success is the product of daily habits, not once-in-a-lifetime transformations.” Our habits are formed and reinforced by what we choose to do each day. Overscheduled and Overwhelmed: Strategies to Overcome Stress

Our fast-paced world spurs us to hurry and hustle. In real and virtual life, we witness people living what they call their best lives. Sometimes, we attempt to keep up with them instead of seeking God for what He has in store for us, causing us to experience stress. While He has certainly created us with dreams, which we may have fashioned into noteworthy goals, we become overloaded and less effective when we try to match the world’s pace. When we do, we miss ourselves and the value that God wants to add to our lives when we prioritize Him. Fueling frustration. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. – Matthew 6:33, ESV The challenge for us is that we chase “these things,” putting our pursuit into reverse order. Instead of God first, we place Him at the bottom of our endless to-do list. We crave His peace and joy, but we imagine finding it in a hustle-and-grind mindset. Essentially, we can become too occupied to enjoy God and too exhausted to savor His rest. That can induce anxiety, further compounding the effects of the kind of stress that leads to burnout. Stress takes its toll on our physical health in both small and significant ways. Self-growth is a process where individuals are encouraged to identify their strengths and weaknesses including in their day-to-day habits and attitudes for purposes of self-improvement to reach certain goals or to realize certain dreams. The underlying premise is that there is always room to become a better version of your current self. While there is nothing wrong with wanting to improve yourself, there is a type of pressure that comes with knowing that even at your best version the world still thinks you can do better, have better, do more, or have more. Because it prioritizes the self, the pursuit of self-growth can easily turn people into self-centered, egotistical, and individualistic beings whose sole purpose is to get to the top. In a world that places increased emphasis on the self, it is easy for a Christian to be caught in a moral dilemma of how to pursue personal goals and achievements while also living the selfless and altruistic life that the Bible encourages. You may find yourself wondering where one must draw the line between following the gospel and improving oneself for purposes of fitting in with the demands of the modern world.
